Flemish subtitling for Superdry

Superdry is an international fashion chain which produces clothing for men and women combining American Vintage and Japanese styling. They have shops in over 40 countries worldwide and this interview with the creators, Ian Hibbs and Julian Dunkerton, is part of a series of videos that were translated for their internal communications channel.

Matinée Multilingual subtitled the video in both Dutch and Flemish.  This example shows the Flemish subtitled version. Superdry has received a number of celebrity endorsements, a highlight being when David Beckham wore a brad leather jacket in 2007.

In March 2010 Superdry Group floated on the stock market with a valuation of £400 million, by December it had a market capitalisation of £1.2 billion. We’re delighted Superdry trusted us with producing the subtitles and we hope to do more work with Superdry Group in the future.

A short history of the Flemish language

English to flemish subtitling service

Flemish is a West Germanic language and it is closely related to Dutch. It is spoken by around 5.5 million people in Belgium and France. It uses the Latin alphabet and has many words from the French and English language. Flemish is also called Belgian Dutch, but it isn’t the same as the Dutch spoken by the people of the Netherlands because the pronunciation and intonation are different.

There are three official languages in Belgium, Flemish, German and French.

Flemish has four main dialects:

  • East Flemish – which is spoken in East Flanders and in some parts of the Netherlands.
  • West Flemish – Is spoken in Western Belgium, France and the Netherlands.
  • Brabantian – Which is spoken in Antwerp, Brussells, Flemish Brabant provinces in Belgium and North Brabant.
  • Limburgish – Spoken in Limberg which is in the North East of Leige in Belgium, Limburg in the Netherlands and the Rhineland in Germany. Limburgish was given official language status by the Dutch government in 1997.

Another dialect is Tussentaal, which is a mix of Belgian and Dutch and spoken by people from various Belgian and Dutch regions.

This video montage features a variety of subtitling projects we have completed in a number of languages.

It also shows four different ways in which the subtitles can be displayed on-screen.
