A short history of the Serbian language
Serbian is a South Slavic language, like Croatian and Bulgarian. It is spoken by around 10 million people in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is recognised as an official language in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
It uses both the Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet. The Cyrillic script is used for official purposes and radio and TV use a mix of both. Serbian speakers are able to understand both scripts.
Serbian vocabulary contains many Turkish words, although they are gradually being replaced by European words from Italy and Germany. There are also some Greek and Hungarian words.
Serbian writing come s from the Middle Ages. However, when Serbia was ruled for 400 years by the Ottoman Empire, starting in the 15th century; written literature diminished and gave way to a history of oral works in the form of epic poetry. In 1850 a standard form of written Serbian was produced and the oral poetry of the past, was put down in written form around the 19th century. The written form was originally the language of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, until the country was broken up in 1991.
