Muddy Boots Health and Safety Documentary with Serbian subtitles

Muddy Boots Productions needed a subtitling company to translate their 21 minute health and safety documentary in multiple languages.

Matinée’s Multilingual was selected primarily because of our low-costs and fast turn-around.  A consistent service was also important as many different language versions of the subtitles were to be completed in stages, over two years.

Since 2007 we have been responsible for translating and subtitling this video programme in over 27 languages.  The translated subtitles are always synced to picture and burnt-in to an h264 QuickTime .MOV file.

To date we’ve produced for this single project in: French subtitles, German subtitles, Russian subtitles, Hindi subtitles, Punjabi subtitles, Portuguese subtitles, Polish subtitles, Punjabi subtitles, Dutch subtitles, Bangla subtitles, Japanese subtitles, Malay subtitles, Urdu subtitles, Finnish subtitles, Korean subtitles, Bahasa subtitles, Turkish subtitles, Macedonian subtitles, Slovakian subtitles, Hungarian subtitles, Czech subtitles, Croatian subtitles, Serbian subtitles, Norwegian subtitles, Greek subtitles, Marthi subtitles and Romanian subtitles.

A short history of the Serbian language

English to Serbian subtitling service

Serbian is a South Slavic language, like Croatian and Bulgarian. It is spoken by around 10 million people in Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is recognised as an official language in Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

It uses both the Cyrillic and the Latin alphabet. The Cyrillic script is used for official purposes and radio and TV use a mix of both. Serbian speakers are able to understand both scripts.

Serbian vocabulary contains many Turkish words, although they are gradually being replaced by European words from Italy and Germany. There are also some Greek and Hungarian words.

Serbian writing come s from the Middle Ages. However, when Serbia was ruled for 400 years by the Ottoman Empire, starting in the 15th century; written literature diminished and gave way to a history of oral works in the form of epic poetry. In 1850 a standard form of written Serbian was produced and the oral poetry of the past, was put down in written form around the 19th century. The written form was originally the language of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, until the country was broken up in 1991.

This video montage features a variety of subtitling projects we have completed in a number of languages.
It also shows four different ways in which the subtitles can be displayed on screen.
