Spanish subtitling for The Gathering – Ireland 2013 promo

Dublin City University’s Language services department required a subtitling company to assist them with Spanish subtitling services for the Tourism Ireland “The Gathering” promotional video.

Matinée transcribed the English audio and produced the Spanish subtitles.  The Spanish subtitles were synced to the video and burnt-in to Apple Pro Res video files for maximum quality.  The Spanish subtitles were also delivered as YouTube Captions (.sbv format) to aid with the videos SEO.

A short history of the Spanish language

English to Spanish subtitling service

Spanish is a romance language like French and Italian. There are approximately 400 million speakers as a first language and a further 60 million speakers of Spanish as a second language. 20% of the world’s Spanish speakers live in Mexico.

It is spoken in Spain and Argentina as well twenty other countries in Latin America, the USA and Europe, due to the Spanish colonisation of such countries centuries ago. You will also hear it spoken in Andorra, Gibraltar and Switzerland.

Spanish scripts first appeared in Latin at around the 11th century. Important works of literature were written during the 17th and 18th centuries and a popular author during those times was Miguel de Cervantes. The pronunciation of the language in Spain is exactly how the words are spelt, with some words having stresses on syllables to accentuate the word.

The official language of Spain is called Castellano and it is different from the languages of Catalan and Basque, which are official languages in their regions.  The Spanish language has words from Latin, Arabic, French, Portuguese and Italian, as well as other Spanish languages such as Galician and Aragonese.
