A short history of the Tagalog language
Tagalog is a language of the Philippines and it is spoken by a quarter of the population as a first language and by the rest of the population as a second language. It has roots in other Philippine languages such as Bikol, Llokano and Visayan. It is an Austronesian language like Malay and Tetum from East Timor.
Tagalog means river dweller and the language was used by natives from the river areas of North Eastern Mindanao and the Eastern Visayas. The Spanish occupied the Philippines for 333 years and during that time written works were completed in both Spanish and Tagalog. The first Tagalog dictionary was printed in the 18th century.
Tagalog was declared an official language in 1997 by the first Constitution in the Philippines, but in 1935 English and Spanish were also named as first languages. At this time the Constitution was asked to find a language which could be adopted by the Philippines as a common language. Tagalog was chosen as the language and in 1937 it was proclaimed that it would be used as a basis for Philippine language evolution.
