Origins of the Portuguese language and accent

The Portuguese language comes from Latin, which was spoken by soldiers who came to the Portuguese region in the 3rd century BC.

Around the 5th century, Portugal was invaded by Barbarians who spoke Germanic languages and they ruled Portugal for around 300 years. Portugal was then invaded by the Moors and after this the official language became Arabic, although many of the Portuguese people continued to speak using Vulgar Latin.

During the Middle Ages the language became known as Old Portuguese or Galician Portuguese, as Portugal at that time was part of Galicia, which is now Spanish.

In 1139, Portugal became an independent kingdom and in 1290 the first University was founded in Lisbon. It was around this time that the Portuguese language was made official and was known as the common language or as the Portuguese language.

During the 15th and 16th centuries Portuguese explorers conquered many countries outside Europe and the Portuguese language spread to places like Africa, the Americas and Asia. In Brazil it is an official language and it is spoken by the majority of the Brazilian people. Portugal discovered Brazil in 1500 when the region was inhabited by Tupi Indians. Over the centuries Portuguese became the dominant language, although there are some differences in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Brazilian Portuguese has about 15 different regional dialects and European Portuguese has around ten, ranging from the Azores area, to the Algarve, Lisbon and Central Portugal.
