A short history of the Zimbabwe Shona language

Zimbabwe Shona voiceover talent agencyShona belongs to the Bantu branch of the Niger-Congo family of languages. Of all the Bantu languages, it is the one most widely spoken as a native language. Modern standard Shona is based on the central dialects of the Shona region, which stretches from the Zambezi river in the north to the Limpopo in the south, and from the Kalahari desert in the west to the Indian ocean in the east. Shona is the term used to describe the continuum of closely related dialects spoken throughout this area.

Standard Shona was codified in the early 20th century and fixed in the 1950s. The first novel written in Shona, ‘Feso’ by Solomon Mutswairo, was published in 1957. Read more
